BATAM NIGHTLIFE

BATAM  NIGHTLIFE
A nightlife district popular among single expats is Nagoya entertainment district, or just called NED, this compact district is bounded by the Melia Panorama, Goodway and Harmoni hotels. Lucy's Oarhouse is easiest to find, turn left out of the Melia’s front entrance and walk 100m. The famous PP Banana GoGo is upstairs. Rio Rita is over the road. Turn right out Lucy's front door and you can see the Jungle Bar, Classics, Red Cock, Bistro, Ice Pub and Steps Music Lounge.  McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Chicken and several money changers are in the same area.

There are three places for you hanging out or exploring,  before heading back for a good night's sleep :
1. Karaoke
1.  Karaoke
There are literally hundreds of karaoke bars located in almost every direction of Nagoya. It is very popular with Chinese and Singaporean, so most of the songs are in Chinese with some well-known English songs. Beside a large karaoke hall, many of them also provide private rooms for a group of three-to-eight people or more, an option to avoid bad singers in the open lounge who seem to think they are competing on Pop Idol.

2. Klub malam
2.  Nightclubs
Nightclubs or discotheques here usually play alternate between techno music and some up-to-date pop. Some places also have live bands, playing English, Indonesian, Chinese, and Singaporean songs. The nightclubs here open from 19:00 onwards and all get busy around midnight and run until 05:00. No strict dress-code although flip-flops are not allowed for clubbers’ own safety.

3. Massage Parlours
3.  Massage Parlours
There are many massage centers that are reputable establishments that offer a professional massage service. Then again there are plenty of the dodgy massage parlours  that will give you a massage and depending on the girl, will offer you that happy ending you may want. There are several massage parlors in the bar district behind Harmoni Hotel which do offer the cheaper massage service like this. An hour massage can be as low as 75,000Rp ( about US$8) though the girls will generally ask for another 200,000Rp (about US$22)  for the happy ending or some call it a sensual massage and with most things in Indonesia a bit of bargaining can bring the price down.

ICE PUB Opening its doors in 1997, the Ice Pub has grown from a small newcomer on the party block to its present two-floor, 2,500 sq. feet entertainment venue. Serving customers from every corner of the globe, Ice Pub has become one of Batam Island’s main nightlife attractions offering a variety of pub sports and music entertainment to satisfy a customer’s need. In other words, you haven’t really known Batam if you haven’t gone to the Ice Pub and did the ‘been there, done that, n’ bought the T-shirt’ routine.

A favourite amongst the island’s expat regulars, Ice Pub’s seven meter long bar and its visual dream stock bottle display of the more popular drinks, assures every customer that his or her choice drink is never going to dry up at ICE. Greeting every customer are the pub’s all female bar crew. But be warned, one should not be fooled by smiles of the petite female bartenders as they have been trained to drink you under the bar or beat you in a game of 8-ball pool. Mind you, the pub has witnessed a few male egos being humbled every now and then, but always in good humour.

Music lovers
On the first floor, Ice Pub’s resident spinner, DJ Manto, is there every night playing a mix of past and present hits. The pub’s music selection covers all eras from 50’s Rock n’ Roll, the early rock of Led Zep, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Queen, ACDC, Rolling Stones, Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, to the 80’s Rock groups and latest hits. All these plus an impressive collection of various Australian, US & UK artists, new Country, classic Reggae, Italian, German, French, Filipino, Indonesian and Chinese numbers makes the Ice Pub the Jukebox of Batam, for a night of boogying to retro, reggae and contemporary dance numbers till two in the morning.

Singers 'r' Us
For all who prefer a more calmer party, just move on upstairs, to the pub’s second floor Executive Karaoke Lounge (see photos). The club’s many friendly in-house hostesses will gladly accompany you for a song or two to your request of popular English, Hindi, Tamil, Chinese, Filipino and Indonesian numbers.

Games people play
If you’re a player and like to unwind after a hard day, then the Ice Pub’s Dynamo Top Brass American Pool table will be make your night. You don’t even need to bring a challenger as the female bar staff will gladly take you in a friendly game of 8-ball pool.

Girls just wanna have fun
As fun is always the essence of a good night out, then the girls of Ice Pub are positively some of the most cheerful local ladies that you will meet in Batam. Unlike the ‘ladies’ in most karaoke, discos and bars, the ‘night ladies’ of Ice are there of their own accord and are always ready to have a friendly chat or a drink with you. An advantage that the Ice girls possess over most locals is that the ladies speak a reasonable command of english.

Cinema XXI Batam City Square (BCS) Mall

Nagoya Hill Batam

 NAGOYA HILL MALL BATAM

There is another new kid on the block, another new shopping mall has sprung up in Batam. It is called the Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall or some refer to it as the Nagoya Hill SuperBlock. No, the mall is not located on top of a treacherous hill, so there are no hill or steep slopes to climb to reach this mall. The mall is located in the center of Nagoya town and very near to Nagoya Plaza Hotel.
The mall is low rise one, with rows of shop houses opposite the main mall itself. The design of the row of shophouses is unique – I particularly like the roof. I was there during the Sunday afternoon, and there were many local people at the mall. There are 2 anchor tenants – Matahari and Hypermart. These are 2 giant retail stores in Indonesia. So when the stores are there, the shoppers will come. Hypermart is located at the basement of this mall. Normally I liked to buy food items from Hypermart, because it is cheap and fresh. The store sells everything from food, clothes, medicine to LCD TV and PC. I like the bakery counter because they offer a wide variety of bread and cakes.

There is a Food Street in the Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall itself. If you are entering the mall via its main entrance, the Food Street is on the left and right. Yes, both the left and right corridor of the mall. There are many food outlets. You can see A&W, KFC and many local food retail outlets. When I see so many food outlets to choose, I have a hard time choosing what to eat. I have to make a choice among so many choices. If you do not fancy the food at the Food Street, there are more food outlets spread across this mall. Just walk and browse, you will find them. I just wonder whether is food such a lucrative business that I see so many of them in the mall.

In the mall, I can see a number of retail stores selling clothing and accessories. I guess young people in Indonesia are also spending more to look good. Perhaps the reason why developers are building more malls is that people love to hang out in the malls rather than in a park or library. Though Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall is relatively new, the layout of the stores can be improved. I can see merchandise being stacked along the walkways, which makes it untidy and at times difficult to walk. After shopping, with a lots of shopping bags, you can get a cab/taxi just outside the mall itself. Remember to negotiate the taxi fare before commencing the ride.

Barelang Brigde

Barelang Brigde

The Barelang Bridge (Jembatan Barelang) is a chain of 6 bridges of various types that connect the islands of Batam, Rempang, and Galang (Indonesia), giving the system its name. The smaller islands of Tonton, Nipah, and Setotok (considered as parts of the Batam Island chain itself) connect Batam and Rempang, the entire Barelang region covers 715 km².[1] The bridge is an icon of the local area and is a popular tourism site. Some locals call the bridge Jembatan Habibie after Jusuf Habibie, who oversaw the project in construction, aiming to transform the Rempang and Galang islands into industrial sites (resembling present-day Batam). However, the bridge site has grown more into a tourist attraction rather than a transportation route.

The full stretch of all 6 bridges total to 2 kilometers. Traveling from the first bridge to the last is about 50 km takes about 50 minutes. Construction of the bridges was started in 1992 and took names from fifteenth- to eighteenth-century rulers of the Riau Sultanate.

The Tengku Fisabilillah bridge connects Batam and Tonton island. It stretches for 642 meters and is the most popular bridge of all, being a cable-stayed bridge with two 118 m high pylons and main span 350 m. Tonton-Nipah Bridge is a cantilever bridge with total length 420 m and main span 160 m. Setoko-Nipah Bridge is a girder bridge with total length 270 m and main span 45 m.Setoko-Rempang Bridge is a cantilever bridge with total length 365 m and main span 145 m.Barelang Bridge (Rempang-Galang Bridge) is a arch bridge with total length 385 m and main span 245 m.

Batam which is known as one of industrial cities in indonesia has a very special Bridge. The bridge name is Barelang Bridge or in bahasa we call it Jembatan Barelang. The name of Barelang itself stands for Batam – Rempang – and Galang. Those are just some islands’ name in the province of Kepri. It goes without saying that this barelang bridge connects these three islands, Starting from the island of Batam – Rempang – Galang. And there are also another islands that considered to be small islands, namely: Tonton – Nipah and Setokok island. Almost all of batam visitors will visit this bridge, because it's so beautiful and swanky. If you go to this bridge on Saturday or Sunday, you will probably see a lot of people hang out there. Especially in Holiday, if you and your family want to have some places to sit there, you must go to the bridge earlier, or else you don’t have any place to sit. So many foreigners and local people come to this bridge just to see the beauty of the bridge and to view the sunset as well.

This bridge is lied down in about 50 km from Nagoya (the biggest city in batam). We can go to this bridge by our own car, motorcycle or bus . If you go to this bridge by bus from Nagoya, you will be charged around Rp. 6000 per person. And if you go to this place by bus, please make sure that you are still able to catch the last bus from there to Nagoya. If i am not mistaken, the last bus from Barelang to Nagoya is around at 5pm. The safest way to come to this place is by our own car or motorcycle. Because we can go home anytime we want without getting scared for the last bus. And if you go to this place by car or motorcycle, don’t forget to assure yourself that the gasoline of your car or motorcycle are full, as you will not find any gasoline shop in this area.

Barelang bridge that has become the icon of Batam island is also sometimes called Habibie Bridge. You probably get wonder, why some people call it Habibie Bridge. It’s just because this bridge was built of Mr. Habibie’s (the ex president of Indonesia) initiative. So he was the one who planned to build this bridge. So guys, if you really like this bridge, you should thank to mr. Habibie because he’s the one who made your dream to see this bridge comes true.

There are so many reasons why people come to this bridge. The good reasons for coming to this bridge are as what I have mentioned above, we can see the beauty of this bridge, and also can view the sunset. Beside that there are so many young couple come to this bridge just want to spend their time there. They will stay in this bridge until night. As there is no lamp on this bridge at night, so they can do whatever they want to do . Hahahhaha. No guys, I am just kidding. Yes, it’s true that they will stay until night, but it does not mean that they will do bad things there :D

The bad reasons for coming to this bridge is, some hopeless and depressed people use this bridge to commit suicide. There were so many people died already here. They used to jump from the bridge into the water, and the body would be found one or two days after. So for you guys who always go to this place, don’t ever try to jump from the bridge, though you are good at swimming, you will hardly save your life once you jump from it. So for all of you who haven’t seen this bridge yet, come to batam island and give a visit of this bridge. I am sure you will not regret to see it.

 General Information

Batam is one of the 3,000 islands, which make up the Riau Archipelago and is closest to Singapore, which is only 20 km away or twenty minutes by air-conditioned ferry. It has a rapid-growing population of around 100.000. As the island develops into a major industrial and tourist area, it attracts an ever-increasing population from other Indonesian islands who see Batam as a haven of opportunity. Once almost uninhabited, save for a few scattered fishing communities, Batam's history took a sharp turn beginning 1969, when it became support base for the State-owned 'Pertamina oil company' and its offshore oil exploration. In 1971 a presidential decree designated it as an industrial area and in 1975 the Batam Authority was formed. In 1978 Batam was established as a bonded area.

In addition to the oil support industries of Batu Ampar and a fast growing electronics industry, Batam now attracts increasing numbers of tourists. Many come from Singapore for a short holiday with friends and family, duty-free shopping and great seafood. The visitors to Singapore hope over for a day or weekend trip.

International standard hotels and numerous economy establishments cater to the expanding demand for accommodation. Business, as they say, is booming. An island two-thirds the size of Singapore, Batam progresses by leaps and bounds. Where virgin jungle once stood are now whole new towns, mosques, churches, temples and supermarkets, soon to be followed by reservoirs with enough water to supply a population of 800,000 and for industrial use, an airport-to become an international gateway - a fine telecommunication system, well equipped industrial parks, and the beginnings of a large new urban center.

Administratively, Batam enjoys a unique status under the Batam Island Development Authority (BIDA). The island is duty-free. The holiday market, this means duty free shopping in town, hotel shops and the ferry terminal. For the businessmen it means wide-ranging opportunities for investments. While all this change takes place, Batam has retained pockets of rural charm, peaceful spots with quiet beaches. Fishing villages supply delicious fresh seafood to visitors. White sand beaches are fringed with palms and kampung life carries on almost undisturbed. Batam makes a great break.

One of Batam's biggest attractions is the fresh and delicious seafood. Giant prawns, live still crawling crabs, live fish taken straight from nets in the sea, lobsters, clams and shellfish are cooked in a variety of styles and all delicious. Try the local 'gong-gong' conch shell where the succulent meat inside is fished out with a pin and dipped in a spicy sauce before eating.
